Love Hurts (Plenty More Fish)

£350.00Price
  • Angler fish mating is quite bizarre. In the pitch-black depths of the ocean, finding a mate is like searching for a needle in a haystack - if the haystack was moving. When a male finally locates a female, he latches onto her with his teeth, fuses to her body and eventually loses all his organs except for his testes. In some cases, multiple males attach to the same female, creating a chaotic underwater love triangle (or other polygon) where everyone's just hanging on for dear life. Talk about clinging to love!

The female is much larger than the males and she is the only one with a bioluminescent lure, called an esca (perhaps so called because once you've seen it up close, you can't esca...!). The glow of the lure comes from symbiotic bioluminescent bacteria. So all in all, a beautiful if somewhat gnarly, symbiotic love commune going on in the down deep.
