In Greek mythology, Delphinus was a dolphin-shaped sea daemon in loyal servant to the god Poseidon. When Poseidon was trying to woo the nereid Amphirite, she fled his advances. Delphinus was sent to find her and persuade her to agree to the marriage. For his service, Poseidon placed him as a constellation amongst the stars.
